Takeshi Kunibe is the President and CEO of Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC), a position he has assumed since April 2011.

He also serves as a Member of the Board of Directors of Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Inc. (SMFG).

After joining Sumitomo Bank (a predecessor bank to SMBC) in 1976, Mr. Kunibe spent many years at the bank’s Tokyo Head Office, in particular, in its Corporate Planning Department, where he worked on the bank’s strategies and government relationships. After assuming several management positions, Mr. Kunibe became a General Manager of the Corporate Planning Department in 1999.

He moved to Osaka in 2001 to manage the bank’s Osaka Ekimae Corporate Banking Office.

In June 2002, he returned to the head office to manage Financial Accounting Department of both SMBC and SMFG.

In 2003, Mr. Kunibe was appointed as a Director of SMBC. In 2004, he was appointed as a Director and General Manager of Corporate Planning Department of both SMBC and SMFG, and in 2006, he was promoted to the bank’s Managing Director.

In April 2007, Mr. Kunibe was appointed as the Managing Director responsible for corporate planning, financial accounting, subsidiaries and affiliates, and public relations of both SMBC and SMFG. In June 2007, he was made a Member of the Board of SMFG. In 2009, he was promoted to Senior Managing Director and a Member of the Board of SMBC.

He holds a BA in Economics from the University of Tokyo (1976) and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania (1982).
